PLAYERS Championship Day 1

By the end of Day 1 of The PLAYERS Championship, a player most of us outside professional golf have never heard of is now leading every top golfer in the world. American Roberto Castro – yes, he is an American –  shot 9-under 63, sharing the course record with Fred Couples and Greg Norman.

Castro came into this tourney ranked 267 in the world. Holder of a degree in industrial engineering, he was not fancied to perform so well at this event. After all, so far this year he had missed cut in seven of 14 tournaments he played in. But here he is, leading everybody else in the 5th major by three strokes after the first 18 holes. Not bad, eh?

How is every one else? Well, PLAYERS Championship Day 1 tells us that:

  • 2nd place is not filled up by Tiger Woods. This position is jointly filled up by Zack Johnson and Rory McIlroy, at 6-Under 66
  • Tiger Woods at 5-Under 65 comes next. Together with a few others: five others.
  • Masters champion Adam Scott guided around by Steve Williams shot 3-Under
  • Phil Mickelson didn’t do very well; he scored Even-Par 72
  • Nice guy Retief Goosen had withdrawn after just 9 holes at Even Par due to back injury. Poor guy.
  • Last placed golfer: Erik Compton who shot 80. The American was basically undone by a terrible 7 on the Par-3 Hole 17.

  • 12 players shot into the water in Round 1. Bill Haas and Ian Poulter among them.
  • 3 players did it two times: W.McGirt, Eric Campton, C. Knost
  • NTP went to Roberto Castro; 1 foot 7 inches.
  • Tiger Woods – ball landed 54 feet from hole, two putts for Par.

Day Two will begin in about 8 hours from now. The survival battle to separate the good from the unlucky. Will Castro keep the lead? Will Tiger move to the front? You can follow it all here (but of course).

Enjoy following it!
